Q & A: PAULA TAYLOR

Paula Taylor With a long resume featuring countless appearances in TV ads, music videos and a starring role in GTH’s new sitcom Nuea Khu Pratoo Thad Pai, this ubiquitous model/actress finds the local showbiz jaded and aims to find new challenges abroad.

I believe there’s someone for everyone. It’s not exactly hard for me to find love. It’s just that people who come into my life find it hard to feel comfortable with me. I guess I can sometimes be intimidating.

People think they already know me. They already have an idea of me from my pictures and from television. What you see is what you get. I’m not faking. I pride myself in being genuine. But there’s a lot more to me than just that! (more…)

PAULA FOR PLAINS AND PRINTS

Unless you’re from Bangkok, you probably wouldn’t know who Paula Taylor is (at least I didn’t). But the actress’ sweet demeanor and sportsmanship displayed in Amazing Race Asia Season 2 has won her the admiration of many. One would be her Philippine-Aussie competitor, celebrity hunk Marc Nelson. Another would be one of top female apparel brands in the Philippines; awarded by the Philippine Retailers Association as the Best Fashion Apparel during the recently concluded 11th Outstanding Filipino Retailers & Shopping Center of the Year (2007): Plains and Prints. There’s a fine line that runs between spontaneity and flaky and Paula Taylor treads it well, both as an actor and Amazing Race Asia 2 contestant.

Hang on to your seat, Paula Taylor’s out to steal your heart and she’ll do it in the nicest way possible. Robert C discovers that flakiness is a quality best savoured in women of a spicy nature.

How long have you been doing this?

Since I was twelve. I did a commercial in the Philippines when I was sixteen, and the director really liked me and asked me to do this full time. But I couldn’t at the time because I was still in school. I missed out on going to university by one point so I had to do a year of TAFE anyway – which you could always defer. If I was in university, I’d probably have said no. So I ended up going. I told my mom I’d be gone six months and seven years later I’m still here. Hi Mom! (laughs). I travelled around the region - Singapore, Hong Kong - did the whole modeling circuit then I got into acting from there.

SUNNY SIDE UP:
Even though show business is full of dark alleys and shady characters, Paula Taylor has managed to maintain her sunny streak.

The Paula Taylor experience is a difficult case to put across in writing. As pleasant as it is, you couldn’t really call it a literary experience encounter, so words don’t adequately describe it. She beams positive and kinda sexy vibes at you, whether in person or through a camera lens, that is her talent and her most effective form of communication.

For those of you who don’t know Paula (people who obviously never take the MRT and see her smiling face blaring from countless Canon Ixus ads), she is something of a big cheese in the pantheon of Thai celebrities. She was born in Thailand 25 years ago to a Western father and Thai mother and moved to Australia where she was raised. On one of her trips back at the tender age of 12, she was asked to do some modeling, got into it and over the years, moved on to a career on billboards, TV and movie, playing the parts of among other things, romantic, heroines, sexy potato chip endorser, a Chanel [V] VJ, and most recently herself on Amazing Race Asia 2. meggurlThe Amazing Race Asia 2’s Paula Taylor and Vanessa Chong may look like girly-girls, but one thing is for sure, they’re always up for an adventure!

PAULA

Occupation: Everything! She is a popular actress, VJ and model extraordinaire.

This self-confessed Energizer bunny is never without a sweet smile. She’s fun-loving, friendly and with her girl-next-door charm, it’s no wonder people just can’t get enough of this half-Thai, half-Australian stunner! But don’t underestimate her, because underneath her sweet and genteel exterior is a fierce competitor and a tough survivor!

Where does your competitive streak come from?

“I don’t know, I think it’s because I’m very strong-willed and strong-minded. People look at me and think, ‘She’s just like a little girl’. I am, I can be that as well, but there’s so much more, it just depends if I want them to see that or not. You just [need to] be confident in yourself, especially if you’re a girl, guys would be like. ‘Uh, she’s such a girl’, but I like that because then they won’t have their guard up so much. But when I do surprise them, they’re like ‘Wow’, they don’t see it coming.” (more…)

Seriously, can anybody even debate global warming at this point? Hot days are occupational hazards when living in a tropical country, so I rarely complain when going about the business of writing about other people’s lives. What I don’t understand is why foreigners troop to the Philippines for the weather, when it’s all bloody scorching all the bloody time, flies are everywhere all at once, and smog fills your eyes.

Gorgeous women, on the other hand, are an together different subject.

See, The Amazing Race Asia stunner Paula Taylor thinks the weather was marvelous the day we met for an interview. The English/Thai looker was all decked out for summer-replete with pants on the short side and a loose cotton shirt-genuinely seemed to be having a grand time in dear old Manila. It was then that I realized it might served me better if I just agreed with her. After all, there is no arguing with a beautiful face.

And so it began.

Paula Taylor is in her element, rattling off answers as fast as I could formulate questions. Some dumb queries (favorite color?), questions that I only managed to ridicule when I played the tape back on the recorder. She is gutsy (Rovilson Fernandez of the Philippine Team of Amazing Race informed us she was the only girl willing to take on the wall climbing task), cooperative, naughty, nibbling on a mineral water bottle she had emptied minutes before. Then Paula, all 24 years of her, became quite and suddenly serious.

The question revolved on her plans after her modeling/acting/hosting career is over. And therein lay the genius of the woman: she outlined the next few years of her life, where she would be a real estate broker, homeowner, businesswoman, and entrepreneur. I was speechless. Later, her eyes would beam when hobbies came into play. She is voracious book reader and is also hooked on Gossip Girl. Oh, and she likes to dance. A lot. (more…)

The Energizer Bunny could only wish it were this pretty. Paula Taylor, 25 years old, Thailand’s fast-rising star, is one bundle of bright energy-always smiling, lighting up the room with her good vibes and optimism, before zooming off to another destination again. “I try to be happy and be infectious to other people,” she says, “I don’t work out or anything, but I just have this source of energy, and I don’t know where it comes from!”

Half-Thai and half-British, Paula has always been on the go. Shortly after being born in Thailand, she and her family moved to Perth, Australia where she grew up. She started modeling at 12 years old, but didn’t take it up full time until 18. “When I started to model, I used to travel all over. I divided up my time between countries, spending a month here and there.” She used to stay in Singapore, Hong Kong, and even came to the Philippines for some modeling jobs. In Thailand – but not really, it’s just that I’ve had just had so much work that I didn’t leave for three to four years!” In Thailand, she has done everything, from being a VJ at channel V Thailand, and even a DJ for two weeks, she’s also appeared in music videos and TV dramas. THE AMAZING FACE

She zipped through oceans and continents and raced from Manila to Auckland, Tokyo to Prague, Hongkong to Seoul, but through it all, arguably the most beautiful face in the latest edition of The Amazing Race Asia hardly broke a sweat and still looked model pretty.

That a fellow The amazing Race Asia 2 fan referred to Paula Taylor as a “fairy” seems apt. racing with childhood friend Natasha Monks in the second season of the hit reality series, the 25-year old actress, model and VJ was enchantingly beautiful, and it was a face my friend likened to those of the usually winged and wand-waving children’s story staple that inhabit forests filled with cute talking animals. Throughout the race, there was never a moment when she didn’t look stunning and ethereal, even though she was running around in sweats & trainers instead of the shiny, flowing gowns usually associated with the wish granting supernatural beings.

If she were a fairy, she certainly granted my fish when I finally met her in person. (more…)

supah-modelPaula Taylor runs the obstacle course on ‘The Amazing Race’ and proves she’s a lot more than just cute.

Getting stuck at a traffic intersection in Prague for five hours got the Thai team - model Paula Taylor and her pal Natasha Monks, a brand consultant - bumped off the latest Asian series of television’s “The Amazing Race”.

But not only did Paula not burst into tears, as is often the case among losers on the reality show, she’s thrilled that the folks back home got to see her plough through four rounds of riddles and risks.

Over the past six years English-Thai model Paula seems to have been everywhere we looked. As well as the fashion shoots for magazine ads, she’s been in more than 30 TV commercials, assuring us that Lay’s are irresistible potato chips, and that she’ll smile for anyone with a Canon camera. (more…)
